Happy New Year!
So for a first post I figured I'd give a rating to my New Years Champagne experience. Two bottles of Moët & Chandon White Star were the Midnight toast beverage and I was going into it knowing that this is the number one selling Champagne in America, and therefore under extra scrutiny. The nose was decent, some apricot and light floral aspects, but on the palette... major acid attack! White Star is an Extra Dry, and supposedly sweeter than Brut, but I have yet to find one I really liked. As I looked around the glasses were mostly full and I had to polish off the remainder of my Wife's glass. So at $30-40 a bottle I would give this a huge pass, and rate it at 84 points. Fortunately this was not the only bubbly I had all night, I brought a Cava (Spain's Sparkler) Segura Viudas, and it was quite tasty for $15 at Trader Joe's. Between my soon to be sister-in-law, my mother, and my wife we polished off the bottle in short order. So if your looking for a good Sparkling Wine, I'd strongly recommend a Cava, start with Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut , it's available everywhere for under $10.
